Motu Catchment Project
Irricon NI has been successful in obtaining funding under the Ministry for Primary Industries Erosion Control Funding Program (ECFP) for a community group project in the Motu River catchment.
The aim of the project is to reduce the erosion in the Motu catchment and therefore the sediment load into the Motu River. The project includes 11 landowners with 13 properties and 8757ha of land in the Upper Motu Catchment. Erosion control plans will be prepared for the properties to highlight areas of erosion risk. The plans will identify areas where excluding stock by fencing the area will be beneficial and where planting will minimise the risk of erosion. The cost of fencing and planting of these areas is included in the funding. Most of the erosion control plans are now complete and work is about to begin on the fencing and planting.
Ecological benchmarking is included in the project and will be carried out before any fencing and planting begins and again a year later. Although it will take many years to fully realise the benefits of the project, this benchmarking will provide information regarding the current state of the river.
If you would like to get together as a catchment and apply for some funding there are two options available, you can either apply under the Control Funding Program (ECFP) for community funding or under the Billion Trees Programme which also has funding available for community projects.
Irricon can help you to coordinate your community group and to put together a successful application. Contact Lilian Sherman on 021 378 308 or Kerry Worsnop on 0278 639 002 for further information.
